Abstract

3D-Track is an innovative methodology for mobile, precise, high-resolution topology and roughness measurements of any type of road surface (asphalt as well as rough roads on public roads, proving grounds or race tracks). The measurements are used to create virtual 3D tracks for various applications in product development or racing environments, such as simulations, determination of circuit characteristics, track condition checks, etc. For any vehicles, 3DTrack opens up new possibilities of researching road influences on the vehicle and tires with respect to ride, performance and noise. Similar applications are possible for off-road vehicles. 3D-Track is unique because it combines quick measurements with high-resolution images. The measurements can even be made on public roads in moving traffic.

Performance profile:

  • High horizontal resolution up to macro-structure: 5 mm grid
  • High track wave length range: 2 cm - 200 m
  • Highest 3D vertical precision: 1 mm resolution
  • Short measurement times due to high speed: up to 80 km/h

Innovative 3D-Track measurement system benefits a wide range of users The measuring methodology and prototype technology providing the basis for 3D-Track originate from DaimlerChrysler Research. TÜV Automotive has developed this technology for industrial use. By rolling out this system to customers (vehicle and tire manufacturers, component and system suppliers), TÜV Automotive addresses the industry's need for true-todetail road and track models. In the world of racing, circuit operators, race teams, simulation teams and measuring teams, etc. benefit from this new technology.

Key benefits of 3D-Track:

  • Significantly improved and more realistic road models for simulations of ride, comfort, handling, fatigue limit and test rig simulations with track profiles
  • New potentials for driving dynamics simulations and tire model development
  • Qualification of circuits
  • Improved referencing of simulation to real-world roads / circuits
