Abstract

In future vehicles, the BMW Group will take a step towards recovering lost energy by consistently extending their electrical energy management tested in series production. By slightly modifying current series components, it will become possible to recuperate braking energy already in today´s 14-volt vehicle electrical system.
The following article will specify functions of an intelligent alternator management, the necessary components such as intelligent battery sensor or AGM battery, the integration of the alternator into communication processes of the electrical system as well as general requirements on the electrical system and its connected consuming units. Intelligent alternator management - the so-called iGR - is the vital part of an infrastructure for the concerted management of energy flows within the vehicle. The strategic approach of the BMW Group is based on the comprehensive application of the system to all model series with the goal of achieving a leverage effect concerning a reduction of fuel consumption for the BMW vehicle fleet.
