Abstract
HEV-type vehicles are getting attention when the price of petroleum is much higher than before. Low fuel consumption then becomes a very important issue in the vehicle development. HEV is a good solution for fuel consumption and has been successfully applied in passenger cars and SUVs. For the large amounts of scooters used in urban areas, the type of HEV used in passenger cars is not appropriate for them. What a scooter needs is a micro-type hybrid scooter. This paper analyzes the fuel consumption of a conventional scooter driving in urban areas, and proposes a hybrid scooter design to achieve low fuel consumption. The reasons of why a micro-hybrid type is appropriate for a scooter are also discussed. Result shows that micro-hybrid scooters in urban will save fuel, and make a significant contribution to urban environment.
