Abstract
Introduction of new emission standards for diesel engines requires further fuel injection system developments. Modern systems are the High Pressure Common Rail (HPCR) and the Hydraulically Actuated, Electronically Controlled Unit Amplifying Injector (HEUI). At FISITA 2004, a new type of HEUI was presented. This was a single fluid injector using diesel oil both as the driving and driven medium of the amplifying piston and is currently under development by Enviro Diesel Systems (EDS) with the support of the University of New South Wales (UNSW). It is a preliminary metering type designed for turbocharged diesel engines up to and including 2.5 litres per cylinder capacity. It can be operated with a wide range of injection pressures and has been tested to a maximum of 230 MPa although higher values seem possible. Considerable developments have since taken place. These have had the aims of ensuring that the design is capable of significant variation to suit different engine types, improving the dynamic characteristics of the rail system and further developing its electronic control.
