Abstract

Different kinds of Limited Slip Differential can be found in the market and are under developing in the industry. "Cone type Limited Slip Differential" (Cone type LSD) is one of them. This type of differential can provide smooth torque-sensing operation and relatively flexible bias ratios complying with the different demands of vehicle performance. Surface topology, cone angle and the forces acting on the cone are major parameters which control the bias ratio and the noise condition, therefore many research works have been dedicated to these developments and their results used to submit patents. There are still two more important factors that must be improved when developing a new type of LSD: its cost and quality/reliability. A new Cone type LSD for Sport Utility Vehicles (SUV) and Recreation Vehicles (RV) which can satisfy these demands has been developed by the support of Korean Ministry for Commerce, Industry and Energy. This new mechanism of Cone type LSD, which has a very simple structure and easy compliance with the vehicle performance, has been developed utilizing Axiomatic Approach and Ultrasonic Nano crystal surface modification technology. The design criteria are derived by evaluating the existing Open differentials and LSDs utilizing CAE tools such as CATIA and APM WinMachine. The optimal design values are also developed by Axiomatic Approach utilizing the same CAE Tools. Consequently, a unique and evolutionary Cone type LSD has been developed. General information about test methodology of LSD is also explained with test results of the developed sample.
