Effects of Fuel Properties to the Cold Starting Performance of a Low Compression Ratio Di Diesel Engine

Abstract

The effects of fuel properties on the cold starting performance and white smoke (hydrocarbon emissions) were investigated in a low compression ratio diesel engine. To clarify the effects of fuel properties, cetane number, 10% distillation temperature (T10), and viscosity were changed among the test fuels. In order to facilitate the ignition of air-fuel mixture at lower compression end temperature, the test fuels were prepared with high cetane number from 54 to 75 by blending Gas to Liquid (GTL) fuel.

The results showed the advantages of high cetane number in the starting time and engine stability. However, at very low temperature condition, it was found that fuel volatility is major factor for cold starting even high cetane number fuel. Moreover, the benefits for engine performance and exhaust emissions in the low compression ratio engine with high cetane number fuel were also evaluated.
