Abstract
Improving gear tooth surface strength in terms of pitting durability and wear resistance is an important issue in increasing the torque capacity of automatic transmissions. In this study, we established an optimum carbo-nitriding process and developed a new steel well suited to this surface-hardening method, thereby making it possible to eliminate the molybdenum disulfide coating previously applied to increase tooth surface strength.
