Abstract

Elimination of a blind spot due to the front pillar was studied for reducing minor collisions of small trucks with pedestrians/bicyclists at intersections. The front pillars are essential for the cabin because they support the roof structure. Therefore, it was newly conceived that the front pillars may be made to appear transparent by making the width of front pillar structure less than the distance between the right and left pupils of a driver. A substantial reduction of the cross section of front pillar could be achieved without degrading the cabin strength by changing the material and plate thickness of the pillar and employing a new method of fastening the front shield.
