Abstract

In December 2005, the European Union passed the Directive 2005/64/EC on
the type-approval of motor vehicles with regard to their reusability, recyclability and
recoverability. Therefore there is a need for support system to effectively calculate the
recycling and recovery rates and to identify whether the all parts are marked the materials
according to material coding standard. This paper proposes a Web-based system to calculate
the recycling and recovery rates connecting with BOM (Bill of Material) for compliance with
EU type-approval and other environmental legislation of many countries. The structure of
proposed support system consists of two modules depending on users; evaluation system and
data input system. The intranet evaluation system is composed of four main steps; vehicle
registration based on BOM information, approval of input data, reference of BOM tree and
establishment of evaluation criteria. The recycling and recovery rates are calculated based on
the information of material and weight of each part following the ISO 22628 procedure which
has four steps for ecological treatment; pre-treatment, dismantling, metal separation and non
metallic residue treatment. The data input system implemented by XML (Extensible Mark-up
Language) is used by designers of HMC and suppliers. After the data input using the XML
system, the data are filled out automatically the main evaluation system when they are
uploaded. Besides the main functions (calculation of the recycling and recovery rates,
reference of the material marking), the system has many other functions; real-time evaluation,
management of evaluation history and input states, upload of input data, connection with
BOM, and others. The system can reduce the evaluation time by at least eighty percent and
reduce the evaluation load of designers and suppliers by seventy percent compared to manual
evaluation.
