Abstract

In light of the widely recognized need to reduce the period of vehicle
development, the large scale of multi- channel measurement system is required. But the
acquisition of the large scale data makes it difficult to detect the trouble. In this study, the
"Mahalanobis-taguchi (MT)" method, that is one of the methods for multidimensional scales,
was applied to diagnostic systems. MT method is expected to have the high ability of
detection that is required by testing of running car.
This paper shows the examples for motor sports and for production car testing.
In some categories of the motor sports, it is monitored the condition of the racing car to use
the tele-metering system by the engineers who are in a pit. But, especially in the long time
event, the workload of the engineers who continue to monitor the data of the racing car is
heavy. Therefore, it is effective to use an automatic diagnostic system. This diagnostic system
for motor sports has to be able to detect the trouble that is not previously expected. As a result,
the diagnostic system that was developed could detect a trouble several laps before the car
stopped, using the data that measured in ´99 Le Mans.
After developing this diagnosis system, the system was tried to detect unusual situation of
running preproduction car in testing. As a result, the system also could detect unusual signal
in the preproduction car before to be detected by the driver.
