Abstract

This article describes the development of a new automobile security system
comprising the three functions listed below, which have been achieved by integrating a
conventional security system (alarm and immobilizer) with telematics technology (the G-BOOK
and G-Link telematics service offered by Toyota). Vehicle tracking system, Alarm and image notification system, Remote immobilizer system. The system can be summarized as follows.

(1) Vehicle tracking system
This system is the result of further development of the based vehicle tracking system
introduced in 2002(G-BOOK service). The old system only functions when key position is
ACC, but the new system (G-Link service), which was developed for the introduction of the
Lexus brand to Japan in August 2005, can track the vehicle for several days after alarm is set
off, even if the key is not in the car. This enables the vehicle to be tracked even if it is moved
by a tow truck. In addition, from September 2006 the new security system can track the
vehicle for a longer period even if alarm isn´t set off.

(2) Alarm and image notification system
The alarm notification system was first developed in 2003, and an improved version was
released in August 2005 by the addition of a security camera and communication processing
ECU to the conventional alarm system. The system is connected with the G-Link system by
the ECU. When the alarm is set off, the security camera takes pictures of the vehicle interior
and exterior, which are then sent by the processing ECU to the G-Link system. The system
sends an email to the owner, who can then view the photographs.

(3) Remote immobilizer system
This function has been developed by integrating a conventional immobilizer system with the
G-Link system. When the vehicle is stolen, the owner contacts the G-BOOK center, which
confirms that the vehicle has actually been stolen. The center then transmits a remote
immobilizer request to the vehicle. When the vehicle receives the request, the engine cannot
be started by anyone. When the vehicle is found, the center transmits a remote immobilizer
release request to the vehicle and the engine can be started again by the owner.
