Abstract

Development of the Diesel engine market has led to significant CO2 emission reduction. At the same time, customers are demanding for more driving pleasure and comfort. Renault and Nissan have decided to develop a brand new 2.0 Liter Diesel engine family in order to comply with future customer requirements and to prepare for more stringent emission regulations. In addition to challenging targets for fuel consumption and emission levels, engine specifications were focused on performance and NVH in order to reach top class level in 1,9 – 2,2 Liter Diesel engine segment. The ability to install the engine in small vehicles was also included in specifications which required a very compact design. Maximum power and maximum torque (127 kW and 360 N.m) lead to a 63,7 kW/l specific power while low end torque has been optimized (e.g 90% of max. torque is available from 1600 rpm). This new performance benchmark of 2.0 Liter Diesel engines is due to an excellent trade-off with the emission levels. This result has been reached by optimum matching of combustion chamber design, injection system characteristics and friction. The Euro4 emission regulation is of course met with the help of a maintenance-free particulate filter. Very low noise levels are the result of a joint optimization of powertrain engine base, injection and calibration strategies. This brand new engine family is developed with both manual and automatic transmissions. The 127 kW version will go into production in 2006, while the production of a 110 kW version has already started in 2005. The flexible production facilities will allow further engine variations to be developed.
