Abstract:

To fulfil pollution standards, new motorizations of cars and trucks needs more efficient, more reliable, and naturally cheaper components. Consequently, steel must be more efficient, just-fitted to the application, and must contribute to global component cost reduction. This paper illustrate the evolution of steel (grades, cleanliness and associated heat treatments or surface treatments) performed to face these evolutions in the case of the most critical component of a car or of a truck (direct diesel injection system, crankshaft, connecting rods, gears, bearings). It presents also a comparison of steel with alternative materials in terms of efficiency.
