Abstract:

A research has been performed in order to select EGR cooler technologies to be used in the next generation of diesel engines complying emission legislation of Euro 5. The constraints for these engines define the requirements to be fulfilled by the EGR cooler, in terms of performance, strategy of use and durability. The requirements have been defined through an analysis of technical specifications received from different customers, together with other information concerning Euro 5 engines evolution. A whole review of the heat exchangers technology has been made and evaluated in comparison with the product requirements. It has enabled to select the proper technologies for Euro 5 applications, and to define their adequate range of use. Besides, this analysis has permitted to plan how the technology must evolve to deal with future, more astringent requirements. An important conclusion of this research is that the optimum choice of EGR cooler technology must be always linked to the specific requirements of the application.
