Abstract

Abstract:

Diesel passenger cars are extremely successful due to their high torque at low speeds (fun to drive) and lower fuel consumption. However, reduced emission standards, especially NOx, will challenge the Diesel engine significantly. To further increase the Diesel- Passenger Cars market share, future emission requirements as well as customer demands regarding reduced fuel consumption, lower combustion noise, increased engine torque and power output have to be met.

In order to achieve the stringent emission targets, high sophisticated fuel injection systems and Exhaust Gas Treatment (EGT) are essential besides further development of the combustion process. Injection pressures of 2000 bar and beyond with highly dynamic and flexible multiple injections are required to achieve low emissions. For further denoxation selective catalytic reduction catalysts or lean NOx traps will be required. Most of these new features would not be possible without precise electronic control.
