Abstract

The diesel engine is the preferred powertrain choice in Europe. This sucess has been achieved by enhancing vehicle driveability, refinement and fuel consumption. The combustion of increased competition between vehicle manufacturers and more straight legislative demands is driving further developments. For sales growth and increased product appeal, the key to success will be the optimim appliaction of technologies that balance the conflicting pressures in engine development.

To meet this challenge, Ricardo has developed ACTION technology (Advanvced Combustion Technology for Improved engine-Out NOx). The Ricardo approach targets the most cost-affective route to meeting future emissions and fuel consumption or CO², requirements. The paper will summarise the development process towrads future European and US emissions passenger cars and light duty vehicles legislation. Single cylinder and vehicle results will be presented and their implications will be discussed. In addition the importance of two critical development processes, advanced combustion system design and Design of Experiment (DoE) techniques will be emphasised. The processes enable ACTION technology to deliver improved and robust results with accelerated project delivery and product development cycles.
