Abstract

Engine breathing is one of the most vital aspects in an internal combustion engine. Increasing the efficiency of air intake allows sufficient supply of oxygen for the combustion process and improves the effectiveness of the air-fuel mixing. Prior sleeve valve technology is known for its immense port design flexibility despite the challenging and expensive archaic valve technology. The prospect of better flow induction and fresh knowledge on innovative valve mechanism application renews optimism of salvaging this overlooked sleeve valve port technology.

To fathom the feasibility of a port flow employing the sleeve valve mechanism, a three dimensional steady fluid dynamics simulation was conducted with a fixed side opening location and two possible valve opening strategy configurations. Consequently, a flow bench experiment was performed to validate the acquired mass flow rate and swirl. The outcome suggests that this optimism is not futile when significant flow improvements were found in comparison to the regular poppet valve port ranges found in literatures.
