Abstract
With an aim at reduction of CO2 emission, the authors considered the application of a diesel engine for small displacement two-wheeled vehicles. It has been realized through research that the necessary engine performance is not attainable from such a small displacement diesel engine when the conventional fuel supply system is applied. In an attempt to enhance engine performance, research has been canied out on the electronic controlled fuel supply system applicable to a small displacement diesel engine for two-wheeled vehicles. By adopting an electronic controlled spill valve with the conventional jerk-type fuel system, the flexibility of fuel injection control has increased significantly. For example, the new system permits a pilot injection, which helps reduction of NOx emissions and noise at idling and high load conditions. The other features of spill-valve-type fuel supply system are simplicity, low cost, and low mechanical loss.
