Abstract

Abstract

The Infrared Side Alert system is designed to help drivers be aware of vehicles in their side blind spots when changing lanes and making turns. A cost-effective safety enhancement for vehicles, the Infrared Side Alert uses passive infrared transducer technology to measure the radiance of objects. The thermal measurement allows the Infrared Side Alert system to detect vehicles entering the side blind spot area and to give an appropriate warning. The blind spot warning can help drivers avoid a lane change accident by providing a visual indication in the side mirrors. This paper will describe the features and advantages of the passive Infrared Side Alert detection system and how the driver-vehicle interface uses human factors methodology to reinforce, optimize and complement good driver behavior.
