Abstract
Linear sensors and actuators are now common in vehicles. It is well established that powertrain applications require more and more actuators and sensors to provide for electronic management of moving parts. Both linear position sensors and linear actuators have benefited from technological advances, securing performance and behavior enhancements, as well as ease-of-integration and cost reductions. In fact, synergies can be won between actuation and position sensing, provided the right technologies are chosen. New linear position sensors for powertrain applications are presented, and the evolution of electromagnetic actuators is reviewed. A new concept for an engine actuation application reveals the potential for synergies between the applications and technologies described. Other examples show how the method optimizes actuation functions, leading to integration benefits, particularly in the powertrain field.
