Abstract

Abstract

This paper discusses the opportunity of using Hybrid Excitation Synchronous Machines (HESM) for hybrid and electric vehicles traction. Most of the time electric machines used in electric vehicles traction are designed according to full load requirements and it is very difficult to get the highest efficiency in the desired (Speed - Torque) region. According to requirements, the electric machine must have the highest efficiency in region which corresponds to partial load. HESM have two field sources: permanent magnets producing fixed excitation flux and coils creating variable excitation flux which can enhance or weaken the flux produced by permanent magnets. This additional degree of freedom compared to permanent magnet synchronous machines allows designing HESM in order to fulfill all electric vehicles drive system requirements.
