Abstract

This paper presents a way of increasing the urban traffic safety. It consists of development and installation of electronic information panel, for monitoring road traffic characteristic (velocity and flow density). Two displays installed in the console, above the monitored traffic line, show information regarding the traffic condition, through the speed of the vehicle and flow density. Wishing a "just in time" warning for the driver, the display of the instantaneous speed was realised by the green light if it falls within the legal speed and red light if it is over the legal speed.

Our goal was to create an informing and monitoring equipment capable of the registration of time and location of crossing vehicles, determining the speed, identifying the category of vehicle and real-time display of traffic speed and flow density. A test version was designed and manufactured a complex hardware and software equipment components which consists of three main modules: the detection module, programmable controller and the information panel. The detection module which ensures vehicle detection through traffic sensors was chosen on the basis of efficiency, reliability and stability in operation. The programmable controller, which processes the data collected from sensors and displays it. It has a hardware platform which can further be connected to other devices (eg. GPRS modem) enables the possibility of its operation both independently and integrated into a system of remote monitoring macro (a version to be made in the future).

Keywords: vehicle count, speed traffic safety, traffic flow, surveillance technology.
