Abstract

The present study was conducted in order to identify new pathways for generating synergies between fundamental public services as are the public transport and wastewater treatment plants. It presents a Well-To-Wheel analysis of the CO2 emissions of Diesel and Biogas as combustibles and the evaluation of the technologies for using Biogas as a possible fuel for city buses. There are evaluated the technological needs for the conversion of Diesel engines to gas engines and the potential of Biogas yields from urban wastewater treatment plants. The evaluation includes technical and economic aspects and a case study that identifies specific conditions, opportunities and threats for the reduction of urban carbon footprint based on the use of biogas from wastewater treatment plants.

Keywords: CO2 emission, public transport, Biogas, GHG, WWTP.
