The Flemish Traffic Centre: Development of a Multimodal Traffic Management

Abstract

The Flemish Traffic Centre is has been constructed in order to detect problems and to find solutions by an intelligent policy mix according to the Flemish Mobility Plan.

First part gives information about the organization, its functioning, and the policy context of traffic management, describes the objectives, the related problems, and the key measures.

Second part explains more in detail the dynamic traffic management organization, the functioning of the traffic control room.

Third part illustrates the traffic management method of current projects e.g. the Antwerp Ring Road in Flanders from the point of view of Traffic network monitoring, traffic counts on highways, automatic incident detection, use of overhead message signs, and some other management tools in other projects, customer-oriented traffic information, co-ordination of road maintenance projects, campaigns, mobility indicators and traffic simulation models.

Fourth part gives perspectives about data gathering, research and modelling. Fifth part gives some potentials for the future and some commercial targets as conclusions.
