Abstract

The obiective of paper´s is describes the new magnesium alloys chemistry, mechanical and physical properties, castability and corrosion properties, to definite used field. The direct applications include power transmission cases, engine blocks, intake manifolds, cylinder head covers, engine brakets bed plates, oil pans, some front suspension components. The magnesium alloys therefore combines good strength up to 200°C, consistent properties, ease of casting and good corrosion resistence. Zirconium refines the grain size and benefits corrosion resistance and porosity. Mg-Zr alloys have more consistent properties in both thin and thick sections, and are not susceptible to through-wall porosity. Magnesium alloys have a relatively low melting point of about 650oC (1200oF), which makes it ideal for friction stir welding.
