Methods for Visualizing the Spray on a Diesel Engine with Direct Injection

Abstract

The paper presents two different modalities of visualizing the injection process in case of a modern Diesel engine with a direct fuel injection system, in order to accomplish later a geometric optimization of the injection process. The investigations were made in two cases: the first modality was in case of using an atmospheric pressure chamber to observe the spray and the second modality is that of using a non atmospheric pressure chamber. With the help of some optical entrances, a laser light cut was linked into the combustion chamber and used together with a CCD camera, in order to observe the injection process into cylinder. Construction of the necessary modifications on the cylinder head for bringing in the pilot injector as well as the optical entrances for the processes visualization into cylinder, was made using a 3D-CAD-model.
