Abstract

Abstract

Air pollution due to use of motor vehicles is becoming one of the major problems in urban across the world. Emission of pollutants originating from mobile sources is primarily conditioned by a technologies applied to the vehicle, vehicle´s technical state, traffic intensity, traffic density, local climate conditions, etc.

As time goes on, motor vehicles had been equipped with yet modern technologies. This especially can be at vehicle devices responsible for reduction of emission of harmful substances. Vehicles had evolved from vehicles with classic carburettors without catalytic converters to modern systems with electronically controlled ignition injection systems and with on-board diagnostics. Thus, initial high values of emission had been successively essentially reduced (CO emission had been reduced by 97.5%, HC by 98.3% and NOx by 96%).

Considering the average age of the vehicles participating in traffic in the city of Kragujevac and the traffic capacity of traffic arteries, most frequently not designed for such a large number of vehicles concentrated at the core city, it is to be expected that the air pollution coming from exhaust emission will become a problem that requires detailed analysis.

For that purpose, a detailed and comprehensive statistical analysis of the vehicle fleet of the city of Kragujevac conducted. An estimation of the influence of the vehicles on the air pollution, according to preliminary conducted measurements of vehicles´ emission in exploitation, has been given in the paper.
