Abstract

Abstract

Great quantities of used tyres, increasing from year to year, create serious problems in environment. As a significant contribution to solving this problem, combustion of the tyres was promoted in Serbia for purpose of gaining energy for cement production. This is really a vital promotion, because it is widely known that no one has taken care of the used tyres in this country. However, bearing in mind European Union Directive for end-of-life vehicles and global needs of sustainable development, energetic exploatation of tyres is not on the top of objectives hierarchy. Because of that, review of some contemporary methods of proceedings with used tyres was given, with which positive effects are provided from the standpoint of preventing degradation of the living environment and saving of natural raw and energetic resources. The advantage was given to those methods with which these tyres are being returned to exploitation phase, either by reparation proceeding (retreating) or by exploiting previously prepared material for production of other products. Other possibilities for gaining energy (energy recovery) are explained as well, that is advantages, failures and limitations to such proceeding.
