Abstract

Abstract

Presented in the paper is an overview and main features of the program suite for the analysis, simulation, and optimisation of turbocharged 2-stroke and 4-stroke internal combustion engines, developed inhouse by ABB Turbo Systems Ltd. in the course of almost forty years. Upon reading the qualitative and quantitative system descriptions, contained in the so-called flexible topology (system interconnection description) and input data files, respectively, the main application (SiSy) performs simultaneous simulation and optimisation of the working process in the cylinders and in each system element under both steady-state and transient operating conditions. Other applications in the program suite can be used to plot and analyse the simulation results. Attached to the software are databases with accurate information on almost all ABB turbocharger types.

The intricate thermodynamic interaction of the turbocharger with the engine cylinders results in a complex optimisation problem that can be dealt with at two levels of detail. Only the most important effects are considered in the quasi-steady, lumped parameter mode, whereas in the distributed parameter mode, full one-dimensional gas dynamics simulation is performed in the manifolds and the connected elements.

The capabilities of the software are demonstrated by several examples dealing with the analysis of transient behaviour of gas engines with wastegate, VTG, and pre-swirl control at the compressor inlet.
