Hybrid electric vehicles are a promising solution for improving fuel economy. The Optimised CVT Hybrid developed at Technische Universität München is a parallel hybrid driveline based on a two-range continuously variable transmission (i√i transmission). Shifting between the low and high speed range is performed without interruption of traction, using two synchronized clutches only. Quick and jerk-free engine starts are achieved by a novel flywheel starting method. The driveline is designed for fuel savings, drivability and ride comfort. The operation principles of the driveline, the transmission and its control are explained in this paper. Experimental results with an emphasis on drivability and comfort, but also including fuel economy, are presented.
