Abstract

Keywords: Flexible bollard, Impact modelling, Finite element method, Road safety.

This paper is concerned with the modelling and analysis of impact resistant flexible bollards made from polyethylene resin and manufactured by rotomoulding technology. Using LS-DYNA dynamic simulation software the impact is analysed when a vehicle hit the bollard at various angles and speeds. The design of the bollard is modified based on the obtained results so that it can resist the impact. The modelling results have been obtained for two different rotomoulding resins, providing useful information for the selection of the appropriate material. The results of the simulation have identified dangerous areas around the stem that need further attention for redesign or for changes in the manufacturing algorithm.
