Abstract

Keywords: hybrid bus technology, emission, fuel economy, solutions.

In order to reduce emissions and improve fuel economy in urban transportation, several hybrid power trains have been designed and are now used in the world. As a relatively new technology hybrid buses can improve drive system efficiency, reduce emissions and reduce energy consumption. Hybrid electric bus has shown a significant improvement in fuel efficiency, but it has several limitations; one is that larger vehicles demand more power, which requires significantly larger battery capacities. This paper gives an overview of hybrid technology applied in city buses, their emissions, fuel economy and barriers to widespread deployment. Particular attention has been dedicated to the state of development of hybrid buses in Europe.
