Abstract

Keywords: Vehicle repair, crash test, occupant safety

Nonprofessional repair can have negative influence on the deformation behaviour of a vehicle involved in a crash. Regarding new materials and production techniques of cars used by the OEMs it becomes increasingly important, that the repair of such cars is accomplished with an adequate technique and quality. To give contributions in coping with this problem DEKRA and partners have started the research project "Fair Repair" dealing with the influence of non-professional repair to the behaviour of single parts, sub assemblies and entire vehicles under crash loads. With a high-speed frontal impact at 64 km/h (as of Euro NCAP) it was shown that a non-professional repair of a vehicle - that was involved before this repair in a pole-to-side-impact scenario - results into negative influences to the behaviour of the compartment. It is evident that the safety of such a vehicle after the nonprofessional repair is not on the same high level than of the original vehicle. A proposal is given on how to cope with the problem of non-professional repaired recent cars to avoid negative influences on safety, quality and long-term maintenance of value.
