Abstract
With a proven fuel economy improvement of 10% and a realistic potential of up to 15-20%, direct injection is one of the most efficient and attractive technology for fuel consumption reduction with gasoline engines. However, the actual status of such technology is still behind the expectations and further improvements have to be taken into consideration. It was the intention of the present work, developed as part of the national research programme AMTRANS, to identify the most important problems to be solved when this technology has to be applied on an existing engine as the 1.6 l used on DACIA car is.
