Abstract

ABSTRACT

Using a spark plug with integrated pressure sensor enables quick and efficient access to the combustion chamber of spark-ignited engines. With these so-called measuring spark plugs a pressure sensor is easily installed in the combustion chamber, without the preparation of an additional bore. This paper covers the basic technology of the measuring spark plug and suitability for typical tasks within pressure indication. Accuracy and performance figures of current measuring spark plugs are shown on a 2.0 L gasoline engine with direct injection and homogeneous charge, in comparison with a cooled reference sensor.
