Abstract

The paper presents the development and use of a simple engine simulation model. The simulation procedure is basically comprised of a zero-dimensional, single zone calculation of cylinder gas change, and of a one-dimensional calculation of flow through the engine pipes and ducts. The simulation model is used for a better understanding and a calculation of heat transfer between the gas and walls in the intake system of an experimental engine. In order to be as accurate as it can be, the simulation model is calibrated with the experimental data. On this calibrated model the change of intake manifold volume is made and the calculation results are compared with the experimental ones. Conclusions regarding engine modelling are drawn from the obtained results.
