Abstract
This paper describes how the vehicle simulation software V-SIM developed by Ricardo plc. can be used to choose the components of a Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV) in order to make the most out of hybridization in terms of fuel consumption. In this study, the components of interest are: the Internal Combustion Engine (ICE), the Electric Machine (EM) and the gearshift strategy used with an Automated Manual Transmission (AMT). The HEV studied in this work is a charge sustaining single shaft mild parallel hybrid vehicle based on a C-segment vehicle. The simulations show that the mild HEV has a fuel economy benefit of about 28% compared to the baseline vehicle still keeping the same level of performance and this fuel economy can be further improved by the use of an adaptive control strategy in the AMT.
