Abstract

ASTM conducted start-ability and pump-ability studies from 1993 to 1996 that served as a basis for two consecutive revisions of SAE J300. In December 1995, the measurement temperature for the MRV TP-1 (ASTM D 4684) was decreased by 5'C and the maximum allowable viscosity value was doubled. In December 1999, the measurement temperature for the CCS (ASTM D 5293) was decreased by 5'C and the maximum allowable viscosity value was increased by a factor ranging from 1.89 to 2.17 depending on the grade. After presenting information relative to the background of these revisions, we shall examine their impact on 269 multigrade engine oils collected in Asia Pacific in 2000.
