Abstract
Since 20 years BMW has now been continuously engaged in the development of hydrogen vehicles. Thereby focus was pointed on technology aspects directly related to the vehicle, say to its components as well as to its safe (daily) operation in normal traffic environment. Moreover a lot of know-how and experience as to the hydrogen infrastructure required, covering all relevant topics ranging from the hydrogen production to the fuel supply station, has been acquired. The outcome of this research has culminated in the manufacturing of a small fleet of hydrogen vehicles which have now been operated intensively since primarily focus on the technology of this 5th-generation hydrogen vehicle, e.g. hydrogen internal combustion engine, its storage and supply system and on the safety technology realized.
