Abstract
The global automotive industry is facing great technical challenges to lower emissions and fuel consumption while satisfying increasing customer demands. A clear technical strategy must be identified to meet these challenges while improving commercial competitiveness. This paper outlines the first stages of the Ricardo Integrated Research Programme (IRP). This programme has developed a small bore four cylinder HSDI diesel engine of 1.2 litre capacity and will demonstrate the application in a mildly hybridised C-class vehicle. The work reported here summarises the performance and emissions development of the engine and supervisory control system. The engine is integrated with a flywheel mounted 42 volt electrical device (FMED). The base engine has achieved a rating of over 60 kW/litre and is predicted to achieve less than 4 litre/100km and Euro 5 emission levels with a diesel particulate filter (DPF).
