Abstract

BMW has developed a completely new generation of 4 cylinder, 4 valve gasoline engines with displacements from 1,6 + 2,0 litres. Among others the outstanding innovation of these engines is the BMW 'VALVETRONIC' This mechanical system integrated in the cylinder head allows the engines part load control without throttle losses by continuosly variable inlet valve lift and timing. The 'VALVETRONIC' reduces fuel consumption in the European driving cycle (KV01) by 10% without any negative impacts on other criteria's: the engines deliver up to 53 kW/litre specific power, 100Nm/litre specifed torque, comply with the EU IV emission standards and can run world-wide any lead free gasoline regardless the sulphur content.
