Abstract
Polyvinyl butyral (PVB) is used in laminated side glass on several new vehicles because of the technologys ability to reduce interior noise. To quantify this benefit, NVH testing was conducted on a Volvo S80 with factory-equipped laminate side glass vs. factory-equipped tempered glass. Noise sources for the tests included both wind and road noise from the vehicle itself and a tractor-trailer truck traveling alongside. Significant noise reduction was noted (2 to 6 Db in the 2 to 6 kHz range). A secondary benefit is that the NVH reduction was achieved while lowering the weight of the side glass by 11%.
