Abstract
Global demands of fuel economy and lower emissions are having an increasing impact on the development of automotive Engine Management Systems (EMS). Cylinder Pressure based EMS (CPEMS) technology has attracted much attention in recent years since it provides many benefits in engine performance and reliability. The AENEAS Project aims to demonstrate these benefits and provide a cost effective solution to the application of CPEMS technology. This is made possible by combining new robust sensing technology with model-based control algorithms. This paper describes the background to this project. Results are included to demonstrate some of the benefits of CPEMS technology.
