Abstract

Enhanced coordination and management of responses to incidents and emergencies on our roadways can save lives, improve traffic congestion, mitigate environmental impacts, conserve resources, and provide many other benefits. The communications networks that are central to most Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) are providing new opportunities for quicker and more effective handling of incidents. The LifeLinkTM system in San Antonio, Texas is part of the TransGuideTM Traffic Management Center. The system uses wireless broadband communications to link emergency vehicles with emergency management centers, providing interactive video, voice, and data services at emergency scenes and while traveling to and from incidents.
