Abstract
Even more than homogeneous concepts, SI engines with gasoline direct injection (DISI engines) require a thorough layout and a sophisticated control of in-cylinder charge motion and mixture preparation. Therefore, the development of FEVÕs tumble-based DISI concept was supported throughout all stages by advanced analysis techniques, such as laser-based in-situ measurements and CFD. Thus, a fundamental understanding of the in-cylinder phenomena was achieved. This paper compiles typical results of the development process on FEV's DISI combustion system as they were obtained from several different projects. The emphasis is taken on in-cylinder flow field and mixture formation.
