Abstract

Restrictions on the engine compartment space determined by recent trends in car body design have necessitated engine induction systems of more complex shapes, despite the high power output and low intake noise that are required.

The continuing improvement in CPU performance and the fall in the price of memory, hard disks, and other memory media have made high-performance computers more accessible for complex calculations of the wave action in the induction system. The authors expanded this wave action calculation from one dimension to three dimensions and, by coupling with the sound calculation, enabled the intake noise to be more accurately predicted. This simulation method is described and examples given of its application.
