Abstract

Characterization of a high-pressure gasoline injector for direct-injected gasoline engine has performed both experimentally and numerically. The macroscopic behavior and spray characteristics are investigated in the condition of various injection pressures and spray cone angles. The quantitative spray characteristics and spray behaviors are measured by using phase Doppler particle analyzer and particle motion analysis system, respectively. Also numerical investigation was performed using KIVA -3 with KH-RT breakup model, and compared with experimental results such as mean droplet size, droplet velocity and images.

The results provide the effect of injection pressure and spray cone angle on the spray tip penetration, spray width, and the atomization characteristics such as mean droplet size and mean velocity of spray. The predicted results of spray behaviors and microscopic characteristics are agreed with the measured results of spray characteristics.
