Abstract

There is no efficient way but numerical analysis in identifying the noise and vibration characteristics of a powertrain in its early development phase, because at that point the testable powertrain is not available. The numerical analysis is, however, confronted with difficulty in modeling process. That is, if the analysts do not have a full understanding about which components of the powertrain have a significant or little impact on the natural frequency and mode shape, it is not straightforward to extract the analytical modal data with high confidence. Also, if the whole powertrain components are included in the powertrain model to minimize modeling error due to omission of some components, then it requires tremendously long modeling time and solution time. In this context, this paper is concerned with how to simplify the powertrain model without producing a considerable modeling error. The results presented here can be used as a reference when the analysts undertake the powertrain modal analysis.
