Abstract

One of the methods to reduce emission of toxic components is continuous control over engine elements that are directly or indirectly responsible for the level of emission of these components. The introduction of these requirements caused formation of a notion of self-diagnostic and utilization of innovation definition self-diagnostic: Self-diagnostic system compares the value of the signals from the circuit of an electronic control device with the control values. If the real signal value do not comply with the control value, the memory of the control devices records the error code. Additionally, the OBD system’s task is to detect malfunctions related to safety (i.e. detection of faults of the brake systems, ABS or air bags). Additional benefits arising from the use of the OBD systems are: the possibility of using the so-called “black box” (freeze frame) to record certain parameters of the vehicle before an accident occurs and the possibility of the identification of the VIN number of the vehicle. These additional functions are important to the police, district attorneys, customs and border control entities, insurance companies, etc. The implementation of the EOBD standard in Poland should be treated as one of the most important stages of the adaptation of the Polish legal system in regards to the environment protection and the laws, rules and regulations of the European Union. This paper includes some basic terms and rules as regards the functioning of the European On Board Diagnostic (EOBD) in light of large number of vehicles in Europe and in the whole world, the level of environment pollution and one of the methods of prevention of environment degradation. This paper also depicts the level of implementation of the diagnostic procedures in vehicles available in the Polish market.
