Abstract

Engine valve caps are commonly used as carburizing on the surface in diesel engine, however wear on valve cap is occurring during the engine test due to the increasing of contact stress and output power. Plasma coating is one of the countermeasures in wear problem. WCC and DLC coatings were fabricated by using Sputtering method. Wear tests were conducted with a reciprocating mode at room temperature under dry and lubricated condition. Measurement of friction coefficient was made in association with the sliding cycle. The physical and chemical characteristics of surfaces were investigated by surface analysis. The feasibility for plasma coated valve cap was investigated by engine durability test.
